Another naptime post. I should probably have some lunch while I have the chance...I have some leftover steak and avocado tacos in the fridge. But mostly I just want oreos, and maybe some video games to go with.

Yep, I went and bought Final Fantasy XII for $25 (oh, the joys of being wayyyy behind the video game curve) after the copy I rented crapped out on me. I'm still getting used to the schnazzy new 3D-with-ranging-perspective navigation and the somewhat-real-time battle system. Am I a total luddite for preferring the old straightforward wander around a map schtick, which didn't have me bumping into shit and getting lost while I try to juggle the camera angle? And I just know I am going to lose tragically at the fighting (gambits? wtf??) since I was unstrategic enough with the plain old menu-and-turn-based thing as it was. Grinding for stats is going to be more irritating than ever. Still, the graphics are mind-blowing and the story interesting so far, so I am willing to exert myself more than usual on the gameplay front.

ONE WEEK TILL KITCHEN RENO. The basement is piled high with all our nice flat-boxed cabinets. I cracked one of them open to see what the doors looked like and did a little happy dance. OMFG our kitchen will be gorgeous and I can't wait!! But meanwhile I REALLY have to make with the packing. This weekend, by god.

Right: about those oreos and video games...

Gambits are something close to a programming language. If you get good at that, you can more or less put your heroes on autopilot for the combats and leave them alone. Grinding isn't as annoying as you'd think, there's a few places where grinding actually isn't dull, even. (Hint: Look for places where there are a LOT of creatures of the exact same type, and kill them, ignoring anything that isn't of that type).

The downside of FFXII is with the Job Point system. Once you get enough JP, all the characters start feeling the same -- they'll all have the same skills, the same spells, the same techniques, so you could make an army of clones if you wished. I sort of wish that you could start a specific path, and personalize that path without them overlapping so much. :\

My boyfriend has the same issues with the JP system as you do. He's playing through for the second time now and has decided that he's only going to give people very select tiles so that they are limited in their own ways (not giving his tanks magic, only letting 1 person specialize in items, etc).

I think it's a lot of effort for a little payback, but that's how it goes, haha.

ffxii is pretty neat. keir played through it and really enjoyed it -- the gambit system takes a bit of getting used to, but it can be worth it. once you get far enough along, there is a little place where the enemies infinitely respawn under certain conditions, and if you are high enough level they don't hurt you, but they still give decent experience... so you can set up your gambits, turn off the tv, and come back two days later and find them all at level 99. not that we did this or anything... heheheheheheh.

but seriously, i agree re. the camera etc, but i am assured by some that eventually you get used to it... i just switched to playing nintendo ds because it has the coordination requirements of super nintendo. ;)

Re setting up gambits and turning off TV: Ha! That is totally the way to do it!

I am getting better at the controls, and once the gambits were actually explained I felt a little less grumpy about them. Games just have to drag me kicking and screaming into any innovation over an interface I'm used to.
