Tum te tum. Monday morning with pineapple tidbits. Pineapple is one of those things that for some reason is really good lately. I had heard rumours around the LJ pregnancy community that pineapple is supposed to have labour-kickstarting properties...and then I read an article pointing out that in order to ingest enough of the chemical in question to actually accomplish anything, you'd need to eat, like, seven whole pineapples at a shot, and at that point the effect you'd most likely see would be a bad case of diarrhea. Which has been known to bring on labour, apparently, but yeah, I doubt that's really what people have in mind when they're talking about pineapple smoothies. Why do I waste my time reading that community, anyway? Schadenfreude?

Walking is a more reputable way of helping things along. I wish it wasn't so frickin cold out. Am I going for a walk when it's -20 and none of my weather-appropriate coats actually fit around my belly? Nooooo thank you!

Mom's birthday dinner was a smashing success; she was delighted and I am pretty pleased with myself. The squash ravioli came out pretty good this time - I suspect the difference may be that last time I couldn't lay hands on real parmigiano reggiano and had to substitute the pre-shredded stuff. Real parmigiano is hella expensive, but oh man, it is so worth it. No wonder cooking websites call it the king of cheese. Also the cake I made with all the royal icing lilies kicked ass, despite the pink flat icing being rather more neon than I'd originally intended. One of the things I'll have to do today is figure out how to make the new camera talk to the computer so I can upload some pics.

Other things I should do today: pack a bag (since, when mom asked whether I'd packed one, her and Corey were both like "what do you MEAN, not yet??"). Oh yeah, and fold some laundry. Otherwise I think crochet, tea and kitties is the name of the game.

Cake pictures!

First off, here are the icing lilies, dried, unmolded, painted, and all ready to go. I was particularly proud of the stargazers - the "paint" is food colouring; I diluted some to get the very pale pink, brushed it on each petal, and then took a toothpick and applied the concentrated food colour goo to make the darker stripe.

And the finished cake. I am a geeeenius.
