Aug. 12th, 2009 02:33 pmSo the Yanofsky family electrician is going to take a look at my schemes and give us a ballpark figure for the kitchen, but he's doubtful it will come in as low as $2500. Grumpf. I thought so. Hopefully a more realistic number will not eat all our budgetary wiggle room.
In other news, this article at Feministe about feminism and attachment parenting made for an interesting read. Also, although less so, this followup to it, whose attempt to define feminist motherhood seems to devolve in its final paragraphs into "well it's otherwise known as ALL-ENCOMPASSING ENLIGHTENED LIBERALISM IN GENERAL". I mean, yes, I agree that these are all important issues and that mothers can and should take a stand on them as mothers; but not so helpful as a definition.
Also interesting, as well as infuriating and spot-on, was the recent Pandagon post on so-called "pick-up artistry" and how the kind of attitude it encourages led to a man shooting up a gym in the states - the (ludicrously long) discussion in comments particularly so. I...don't even know what to say about this. Many of the comments do a much better job than I could of articulating the teeth-gnashingly, hair-tearingly egregious problems with PUA "techniques". Especially regarding the "neg" - which, GOOD FUCKING GOD, people, even leaving aside the disdain for your "target" (amounting to rank misogyny) implied by such a stratagem, exploiting your target's insecurity and lack of confidence in order to get ahead in "the game" IS NOT COOL. If this particular bit of assholery ever works on a woman, that would be why: because she is a little confused and intimidated by receiving a subtle insult from a stranger, and goes along with the conversation so as to not be a bitch.
