Home from sweet, sweet Stratford.

Bought many books - One of our regular shopping stops is a place called The Book Vault, which has comics and a wide variety of good remaindered books in addition to more usual fare. Snapped up the rest of the Ramona series, a couple of Asterix books, a couple of big old gardening volumes, some Diana Wynne Jones, and some new graphic novels that look to be an interesting mix of biblical stories and near-future dystopia. Also a "prequel" to the Little House books - there's a series about Laura's mother and her daughter now. A cool idea but unfortunately nauseating in its execution. More on that in another entry when it's not 11 PM on a work night.

Saw a few plays - these being:
Albee's A Delicate Balance: the liner notes linked him with absurdism/existentialism, and in some ways this did remind me a lot of the Sartre plays we saw a couple years ago, but it was a little verbose and anticlimactic - not nearly so horrifying;
A modern Caribbean version of The Odyssey: very dense poetry but a striking, incredibly interesting, and surprisingly convincing production (given all the weird re-contextualizing and modern touches thrown in) - the Cyclops as a dictator, for instance, was scary in a way it wouldn't have been as a run-of-the-mill monster, and the burned-out car in the middle of the set served admirably as a boat, a raft, a rock, a dais, and other assorted settings over the course of the play;
Wilde's An Ideal Husband: much more serious and plot-oriented than The Importance of Being Earnest, but nonetheless very funny and highly enjoyable.

Had lots of good food and wine - every now and again it is really nice to go out and splurge on meals at real restaurants and wine beyond the house white. Mmmmmmmm, riesling.

Now must go to bed so as not to be a post-vacation zombie at work tomorrow. Also tomorrow must call my neighbour about her lamp and work on my cousin's lamp, which is slooowwwwwwwly creeping towards being done. Also must dig up that pattern I've been hanging onto for the piece I owe [livejournal.com profile] arndis and [livejournal.com profile] tchang, and must finish outlining the pieces for the squash lady.
